Christians and religious people around the world have been claiming that homosexuality is a sin. Now, this article will mainly address Christianity as this is the religion to which I am most familiar and subscribe to in one part or another so that is what I will discuss.
When I have done research on this in the past, I have found that Christianity’s relationship with homosexuality is quite different from what you would hear if you went to speak to a preacher.
A priest would most likely claim that homosexuality is a sin. Now I have debated quite a few Christians on this before both online and in person and there seem to be two main arguments that Christians have to say homosexuality is a sin.
The first is that homosexuality is a choice and that since it’s a choice they are choosing to sin. Now I call this argument a get-out-of-jail-free card because it sidesteps the obvious. The obvious is that according to Christians all human beings have been created in the image of God.
The Bible says all human beings have been created in the image of God which should make it obvious that from a Christian perspective that racism is wrong because when you are a racist you are basically saying that not all humans were created in the image of God.
But aside from this, there is something that follows logically from this statement in that if all human beings were created in the image of God, then clearly, he made those people gay and thus if he made them gay how could it be a sin?
This is where the choice argument comes in. You see rather than having to answer why God made those people gay they sidestep the argument by saying that he didn’t make them gay and that they are choosing to sin.
Now your typical leftist would say that they have a right to be gay and it is true that people do have a right to be gay but that doesn’t really address what argument the conservative Christian is making so let’s address it.
The conservative Christian claims that being gay is a choice. Well if that is the claim, they are making then there is one important point about making a claim. That it is the burden of the believer to prove their claim is correct.
I am quite sceptical of this choice argument as I never choose to be a heterosexual male who is attracted to certain females in the same way that I never choose to not like beer. I would love to like beer as it is way cheaper than buying spirits.
In fact, there are a lot of preferences that I have in my life that I never chose to have and thus I am very sceptical of the argument that people choose to be gay thus since there is no proof that people choose to be gay or straight or bi or whatever I can safely say that if God thought being gay was a sin he wouldn’t have made of those people that way because the Bible says all human beings are created in the image of God.
Now there will be part 2 where I go into bible history and translation about this, but I think this is a simple argument with very sound logic like a well-written program for now.
